Events in central London in January 2013:


If you are planning a visit to London - for business or for pleasure - during January 2013 there are plenty of events taking place to intrest you, in addition to the plans you may already have for business meeetings or sightseeing and shopping.  london has a wide range of exciting events taking place in every month of the year and these are just a small selection of the events in central London in January 2013:



1st January 2013
Central London
After a night of extravagant fireworks to celebrate the arrival of the New Year at the Mayor's free New Year's Eve Fireworks, London moves on to a New Year's Day parade, which winds through central London, starting in Piccadilly (at the junction with Berkeley Street) at 11.45 a.m., down Lower Regent Street, along Pall Mall to Trafalgar Square and then down Whitehall, finishing in Parliament Street at about 3.00 p.m.  With over 10,000 performers from over 20 countries taking part, it is a colourful parade that will be attended by around 500,00 people, so it is advisable to get to your desired vantage point early.  Acrobats, marching bands, clowns, cheerleaders, kites and much more will make this 27th annual parade a special event for all the family.

27th December 2012 - 16th January 2013
Royal Opera House, Bow Street, Covent Garden, London WC2E 9DD
Christmas and New Year just wouldn't be the same without one of Tchaikovsky's magical ballets and "The Nutcracker" is a staunch favourite for adults and children alike.  Performed at the historic Royal Opera House, this production by Peter Wright makes the best of the magical story and wonderful score start in the Silberhaus home with the children gathering around the tree but Clara's fascination with her favourite - a wooden nutcracker in the shape of a little man - leads her on an adventure in which the Nutcracker turns into a handsome Prince and takes Clara to The Land of Sweets, where they are crowned rulers in place of the Sugar Plum Fairy.

5th January - 14th February 2013
Royal Albert Hall

Cirque du Soleil return to London's Royal Albert Hall with this first showing in the U.K. of their "Koozka", which has already captivated almost four million in audiences around the world with Cirque du Soleil's stunnign combination of contemporary dance with breathtaking acrobatics and clowning.  "Koozka" tells the story of the main character, The Innocent, who is searching for his place in the world.  As ever with this group, the peformance includes trapeze artists, contortionists, high wire artistes.  "Koozka" also features the Wheel of Death with two men running in place on top of a rapidly spinning silver sphere.

11th - 13th January 2013
Canada Place,  Canary Wharf, London, E14 5AB
The biggest ever London Ice Sculpting Festival has been extended to 3 days and is a ree annual event with a lot of cool action for experienced ice sculptors and novices alike.  In the fast sculpting competition, talented ice sculptors from 12 countries will compete against the clock to create artwork from 2 metre blocks of ice.  In an ackowledgement of NASA's Mars mission, the themes they will carve to are 'The Wonders of the Universe' and 'Infinity'.   Masterclasses enable anyone over the age of 12 to pick up a chisel and learn the basics of ice sculpting whilst, for the first time this year, an Ice Graffiti Wall gives adults the chance to display their talents.  The Snowpit is for children of all ages to dive into real snow and enjoy making snowmen, snowballs and more.

12th - 20th January 2013
ExCel, One Western Gateway, Royal Victoria Dock, London E16 1X
The Tullett Prebon London Boat Show is London's biggest and best Boat Show.  Open to the public, this show appeals to seasoned boat lovers, those just considering investing and anyone with any degree of interest in seeing what is on show, which includes not only boats but water sports.  With over 500 exhibitors displaying at London's prime exhibition centre, there is plenty to see, easy access to the advice you may need and plenty to show for.  From some of the world's most expensive yachts to multi-activity pools that give you a chance to try your hand at canoeing to on-water displays by Jack Moule - British Jet Ski Freestyle Champion - the Tullett Prebon London Boat Showhas something for everyone.

Hampton Court Palace, East Molesey, Surrey, KT8 9AU
1st December 2012 - 13th January 2013
We have highlighted this of the many ice rinks over the Christmas and New year period in london simply because it goes on until later than most.  Almost all others close down on 6th January.  So, if you cannot make it to London by 6th January you still have a chance to enjoy some skating with the magnificant backdrop of the wonderful Tudor palace - a favourite of King Henry VIII.   Less central in London than the other rinks, Hampton Court Palace has a splendid location alongside the River Thames and is very well worth a day visit in its own right.
Travel from Harrington Court Apartments:  Underground from South Kensington station direct to Wimbledon.  Change to take an overground train to Hampton Court for the short walk to Hampton Court Palace.



13th - 15th January 2013
Earls Court Exhibition, Warwick Road, London SW5
Top Drawer describes itself as "the U.K.'s leading event for design-led gifts, lifestyle and fashion accessories" and is now held twice a year at London's Earls Court.  It is a trade show only but appeals to a wide professional audience of some 15,000 visitors - largely buyers from brands, large and small, looking to source new ranges.  Split into 5 zones - Gift, Fashion, Stationary & Greetings, Cildren's and Wellbeing - there is something here for the entire retail industry.  At the time of writing, registration for the event is still open.
Travel from Harrington Court Apartments:  Underground from South Kensington station direct to Earls Court station (District Line).  Take the Exhibition/Warwick Road exit and Earls Court Exhibition is just across Warwick Road.



17th - 28th January 2013
Royal Opera House, Bow Street, Covent Garden, London WC2E 9DD
Premiered at the Royal Opera House in 2008, The Minotaur is a re-working of the ancient Greek myth by Harrison Birtwhistle to a libretto by the poet David Harsnett.  The Minotaur, a son of Poseidon, does not properly understand his half beast, half man existence and the human side only comes through in his dreams when he gains speech.  Speech comes to him again when he is challenged by Theseus, who succeeeds in killing him.  The Minotaur laments his empty life as neither fully man nor fully beast as he lies dying.

19th October 2012 - 3rd March 2013
Natural History Museum,  Cromwell Road, London SW7 5BD
The 2013 Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition is on between 7th January and 25th February and whilst that is happening, the 100 superb, prize-winning photogrpahs from the 2012 competition are on display in a dramatic cinematic setting.  Although entrance to the Natural History Museum is free, there is a £10 charge for entrance to this special exhibition and you can buy the tickets online at the link above.

26th December 2012 - 20th January 2013
Harrods, 87-135 Brompton Road, Knightsbridge, London SW1X 0NA
The "January" sale actually started on Boxing Day, 26th December but leaving any mention of sales out of a list of January events in London just wouldn't be right.  The fierce competition for the biggest bargains is over by the time January begins but the Harrods sale, like the store itself, has gained the status of a sight to see whilst in London at this time.  There will also still be bargains to be found throughout the sale period, so don't assume that you will come out again empty handed.
Travel from Harrington Court Apartments: it is about a 7 minute walk along Thurloe Place into Brompton Road and along brompton Road to harrods.  Alternatively, you can take the Piccadilly Line from South kensington station to Knightsbridge station and walk down Knightbridge and Brompton Road from there.



This is just a selection of events in central London, which start and finish in the month.  There are many other events - shows, exhibitions at major museum and galleries and much more which started before January 2013 and finish after the end of that month and whichw e have not attempted to cover here.
