Central London is noted for its numerous small, usually private, garden squares that still exist in most residential areas.  These were made famous for some by the film "Notting Hill".  This year, 212 gardens spread across 27 London boroughs open their gates to the curious public giving you a chance to peer at what lies behind.  Organised in conjunction with the National Trust, this weekend gives you a unique opportunity to visit some of London's historic and mostly beautifully maintained garden squares.  One ticket gives you access to all 212 garden squares but a small number do need to be booked in advance.

16th June 2012
Royal Horseguards Parade, Whitehall, London SW1A 2AX
If you thought that Royal celebrations would come to an end with the Diamond jubilee weekend, you could not have been more mistaken !  Trooping the Colour takes place annually on H.M. The Queen's official birthday, which she has (as previous monarchs before her) because her birthday actually falls in April, when the weather may well not be as suitable for an outdoor event.  Held annually since 1820 (and erratically in varied forms from 1700) this event is full of the pomp and ceremony for which London and the U.K. are so noted.  Her Majesty travels by varriage down the Mall from Buckingham Palace to inspect troops on Houseguards Parade and returns the same way, giving ample opportunity to watch her go by, even if you cannot get near to Horseguards Parade itself.

Travel:  Underground from South Kensington station direct to St. James' Park or to Westminster for the walk to The Mall or Horseguards Parade, depending on your chosen obervation point.

Ascot Racecourse, Ascot, Berkshire
This 5 day event is probably the most famous horse racing event in the world and is as much noted for fashion - and especially the hats of the ladies - as for the races themselves.  As an event, Royal Ascot is 300 years old and is the U.K.'s most watched race meeting.  H.M. The Queen, who has a passion for horses and hore racing, travels to the event each day by carriage from nearby Windsor Castle.  The Golden Jubilee Stakes and the Gold Cup are the two most noted races.

This year's theme is "the playful city" and is inspired by the theme of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.  The London Festival of Architecture  is a celebration all over London of London and U.K. architectural talent and invites architects, communities and visitors to get together to establish how to make London even better.  Visitors can go on guided walks, attend expert lectures and gain access to buildings, such as embassies and cultural buildings, many of which are normally closed to the public.  The organisers seek to involve families with events such as Architectural Treasure Hunts and a family-friendly festival at the London Pleasure Gardens.
