Beckett's masterpiece returns to the Theatre Royal Haymarket with Ian McKellan repeating his role as Estragon whilst Roger Rees steps in to take the role of Vladimir. Famously described by Vivian Mercer in the Irish Times in 1956 as "a play in which nothing happens, twice", two men wait by a tree in an unknown place at an unknown time for somebody equally unknown by the name of Godot.
The character Pozzo (Matthew Kelly) and his slave Lucky (Ronald Pickup) pass by and a messenger from Godot arrives and leaves again and all this inaction is followed by act two which is essentially a variation on act one. However, clearly Beckett did not intend "nothing" to be the message and those who have seen the play and studied Beckett's work are challenged to discover some hidden truth about life behind the inactivity. 'Waiting for Godot' was premiered in London in 1955 and caused a storm of controversy then. With such an impressive cast tackling this work, it is certain to be well worth seeing - to formulate your own view on the big unanswered question..
Travel: Take the Piccadilly Line from South Kensington tube station direct to Piccadilly Circus - taking the Haymarket exit from Piccadilly Circus station - for the short walk down Haymarket to the Theatre Royal.
